Pioneered by the Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan, Khaplu Palace, which was once the former seat of government and one of Baltistan's finest royal residences, has been restored from a dire state of dilapidation.
FND was responsible for the design and integration of modern heating, ventilation and plumbing systems in the project- a challenge for all conservation projects.
The heating system is based on hot water produced by diesel operated boilers.
A modern kitchen and cold stores were designed for the restaurant. An air-conditioning system using chilled water from an underground stream was also designed but not currently implemented.
